“Build relationships, don’t burn bridges”

– AARON JOHNSTON

A ‘FRESH COLLECTIVE’ graduate from 2014, we reached out to Aaron in 2018 with some questions so you can benefit from shared advice that has served him well over the past four years.

1.How did you first get into design?

Cliché – At the age of 12 I was screen printing my own shirts and designing a range of skateboard brand material. I was heading in the fine arts direction until my school I was attending at the time added a new graphic design unit, from then on I haven’t looked back!

2. What project are you most proud of?

I would have to say creating the branding/web and strategy of a new innovative modular systems company called InnMod. I am most proud of this because I have created it all on my own (With executive decisions) and learned many things along the way. Check it here: www.innmod.com.au – Plus, so other recent work here: remassage.com.au and www.bestbar.com.au

3. Advice for TAFE’s current students?

Have heaps of fun. Knuckle down. Pay attention to ALL units. Get sleep. Be social. Learn outside of work hours: Lynda, Youtube, Blogs, Articles, Forums, Books are a great way to learn (Not only about design). Be inspired, look around the globe for studios/agencies/marketing firms. Read how they have positioned some of the largest brands in the world and what their solution was to the problem. Quality over Quantity. Create something weird. 95% of people are nice, talk to them, they won’t bite. Learn the digital world, it’s taking over. Buy new mockups or get crafty and create it yourself. Add $200 to your print card.

4. What is Perth design in need of most?

There is a lot of great resources out there including AGDA and The design kids so, to be honest, I can’t think of many! Flexible printers? Maybe more focus on digital at colleges/uni/tafe?

5. In terms of finding your first job after graduating, what worked best for you?

I was very lucky, slotting straight into the family business after work experience with an agency in Perth. My advice would be to work hard, talk to people, get advice and feedback from mentors/tutors. Proof your work. Make your self irreplaceable (if you get the job).

Breathe, you won’t die if a job doesn’t land in your hands when graduating, give it time.

Build relationships. Don’t burn bridges.
