“Enjoy the extended time given for the creativity process and using it to dig a little deeper…”

— SARA WILLIS-JONES

Tell us a little about your experiences since. Where have you worked? Where do you work now?

After graduating I learned a lot of essential skills working my way through some of Perth's design studios like Turner design and CRUSH, scored a job in Crown's Marketing department after that. This made a massive difference to my carrier giving me the confidence to play solo as an in-house designer for Regen Strategic, a strategic communications firm for over 5 years. Currently I am an Art Director at Glow Creative which is a spin off Regen Strategic's Creative department.

How did you get your first graphic design job?

I was very lucky to achieve an award for the best corporate portfolio at my graduation in 2009 which lead to my first exciting job.

What advice would you give to Graphic Design students studying at NM TAFE right now?

Enjoying the extended time given for the creativity process and using it to dig a little deeper by integrating different techniques in the search for that original concept. In real life, the deadlines under which we have to produce work often don't allow for that level of exploration. Also trying to get some real life experience while studying will help a lot getting ahead.

What is post-pandemic Perth design in need of most?

I think there is a shortage in designers so it's a great opportunity for good designers.

What do you think are the most important qualities in a graphic designer?

Understanding and translating a brief, being creative while being on brand.

Please list some awesome new developments happening right now in the design industry.

  1. Projects are becoming more and more about people showcasing diversity through inclusive design.

  2. I am noticing an appetite for bolder and brighter colours.

  3. Integration of illustration and motion graphics take design concepts to the next level.

  4. Videos are growing in popularity, 82% of internet traffic is now video. (Cisco prediction 2022)

Any further comments that may assist with our course and curriculum development?

This might have changed from when I studied at TAFE but I feel animation and basic web development knowledge should be part of the curriculum no matter what you are majoring in. More real-life briefs from real companies with tight deadlines might also be a great exercise.
