“Experiment and be open to trying the different areas of design through your units”

— LOGAN MACKIE

Tell us a little about your experiences since. Where have you worked? Where do you work now?

I spent close to two years at the Department of Premier and Cabinet, working in the COVID-19 Communications team. I had the opportunity to work on various campaigns, including Roll up for WA. I worked on the ServiceWA branding and designed digital assets for the WA Government social channels. In the recent months, I have been working in my new role as a Designer at the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovations (JTSI). Getting the opportunity to design a wide variety of assets and branding collateral. Anywhere from publications, digital and print assets, to large format print for upcoming conferences in the world of sustainable energy.

How did you get your first graphic design job?

Word of mouth through the TAFE, thanks to the help and guidance of my lecturers - thanks Brendan and Leigh ;) - Developing my portfolio and presenting them to studios such as Likeable Creative helped me get my foot in the door and start learning from amazing creatives.

What advice would you give to Graphic Design students studying at NM TAFE right now?

Experiment and be open to trying the different areas of design through your units. Ask questions, work with other students and ask for advice from your lecturers. Use the ISTD project and your final year to put your skills to the test, especially in the world of typography, layout, design hierarchy and setting up publications. - Freelancing where you can to gain real experience working with clients.

What is post-pandemic Perth design in need of most?

Bringing the fresh trends through to the industry. The advantage of having researched the current trends of design in TAFE and using motion design gives an edge to your work that you don't see as much of in some parts of the design industry.

What do you think are the most important qualities in a graphic designer?

Working well with people, collaborating and understanding of client needs, whilst trusting and providing others with your design advice through what you have learnt. Willingness to adapt and learn.

Please list some awesome new developments happening right now in the design industry.

The continued constructive/positive criticism. Working with other creatives and clients is one of the biggest things. Encouraging the involvement in TAFE's design shows/grad show.

Any further comments that may assist with our course and curriculum development?

I think the preparation of creating artwork in different formats through responsive design is important to know when going into industry. For example, large format print, press and publication.
