“…pull out all stops and cross all lines in design and experiment with everything.”

– SULTANA SHAMSHI

Tell us a little about your experiences since. Where have you worked? Where do you work now?

My studio at home is my workplace. I have been working in it continuously since I graduated, I love designing and making jewellery. My practice has led me deep into the arts in WA, and I have exhibited every year since.

I have been experimenting with a myriad of materials and techniques and hope to continue doing so for as long as I can .
I sell work at Aspects of Kings Park, Found at FAC and Mundaring Arts Centre.i have private clients as well and this keeps me as busy as I need to be.

How did you get your first design job or solo exhibition?

I was invited to be a part of a group exhibition at the Mundaring Arts Centre, and subsequently invited for many more exhibitions.

What advice would you give to current Art & Design students studying at NM TAFE right now?

Jewellery design can be challenging to build a career, but it isn’t an end in itself , it is a springboard for a career in the arts in general.
It is a lead up to fashion design, sculpture, environmental art and design and so much more.
Today I have done residencies and workshops with communities all over WA, collaborating with established artists and community workers.
I would say to the first year students to read and research as much as possible about jewellery in history.this will give you a perspective to its importance in world culture.

It will also give you an idea if it is truly what you want to do.

To the graduating students I would say to pull out all stops and cross all lines in design and experiment with everything. Jewellery is fine arts if your journey is in that direction.
If not , keep learning all the techniques, stone setting, enamelling etc that would allow you to create fine jewellery.

What can Perth and Western Australia do to support graduating diverse range of Art & Design students more?

Perth is limited in its specialisations, so further development would entail going away.
There has to be many opportunities and scholarships for students wanting to specialise. More grants should be made available. And perhaps a mentorship’s like they used to give should be reinstated.

What do you think are the most important qualities in an emerging designer or artist?

Honing skills to superior levels, Being original and keeping a finger on the pulse of current technology and materials.

Please list some awesome new developments happening right now in the Art & Design industry that you are excited by.

Only one way to future proof our course is to have full time employment for lecturers and teachers to ensure that you have the best and that you keep them and value them.

New technology is mind blowing and needs to be incorporated into your practice.
